Resumo


The main goals of the OVUA Volcanic Seismology Monitoring Group (GSV) are the detection, characterization and location of volcanogenic earthquakes and volcanic tremor. In this way it complements the Azores Seismological Surveillance System (SIVISA), performing studies directed to the understanding of the seismic source dynamics and fluid transport mechanisms and its interaction with the existing fault systems.

 

In order to achieve such goals, specific methodologies are being progressively implemented. In a first phase, and to increase the capability of detecting and register the different type of volcanogenic seismic signals, 3 digital 24-bit portable seismic stations were acquired and an experimental development programme in the seismological instrumentation domain was initiated. This last programme included the design, construction and test of equipment such as short period portable digital seismic stations, with electronically extended response sensors, and the design, construction and implementation of a digital telemetry seismic network around Sete Cidades Caldera, on São Miguel Island. Next steps will involve the implementation of other seismic networks of this kind on other active volcanoes of the Azores and the development and implementation of seismic arrays (antennas) to locate the source of seismic signals of volcanic nature. Different particular solutions for data transmission are being tested and under consideration, to be used by temporary portable seismological monitoring networks during seismic crisis.

 

On the behalf of the EU e-Ruption project, the GSV hosted, between April and June, 2003, a joint Italy-Portugal-Spain team that carried out a seismic field experiment (Saccorotti et al., 2004) in the area of the Furnas-Fogo volcanoes, São Miguel Island (Wallenstein et al., this volume). The aim of the experiment was to collect high-quality data in order to characterize the present level of activity of those volcanic systems. The results were fortunately enriched by the occurrence of a seismic swarm, with epicentres located at the centre of the installed seismic network (Saccorotti et al., 2004).
