Sismo sentido na ilha de São Jorge

O Centro de Informação e Vigilância Sismovulcânica dos Açores (CIVISA) informa que às 23:16 (hora local = hora UTC-1), do dia 28 de fevereiro foi registado um evento com magnitude 2,1 (Richter) e epicentro a cerca de 1 km a SSE de Beira, ilha de São Jorge.

De acordo com a informação disponível até ao momento o sismo foi sentido com intensidade máxima III (Escala de Mercalli Modificada) na freguesia de Rosais (concelho de Velas, ilha de São Jorge).

O CIVISA continua a acompanhar o evoluir da situação, emitindo novos comunicados caso necessário.

(11) Volcanic Activity Summary	The seismovolcanic crisis that started at São Jorge Island on 20220319/1705Z is still ongoing, but in the last few weeks, seismic activity shows a slight decreasing trend, sometimes interrupted by short periods of higher hourly frequency and/or release of energy, with the hypocentres currently being located, in general, at depths greater than 5 km. The decrease in seimic activity, although slow, over the last few weeks, as well as the abscence of other anomalous signs, related to ground deformation, gases and waters, led CIVISA to decrease the Scientific Alert Level from V4 to V3 for São Jorge Island. CIVISA maintains high monitoring levels at São Jorge Island and is providing the strengthening of the permanent seismovolcanic observation network, which in case the present activity pattern is reversed, it can detect precursor signs of a new pre-eruptive situation.

(14) Remarks	São Jorge Island is a WNW-ESE-trending fissure volcanic system, characterized by Hawaiian/Strombolian volcanism forming chains of scoria cones and associated lava flows. The western half of the island corresponds to the active Manadas Fissure Volcanic System, which was the site of two historical eruptions (AD 1580 and AD 1808), that produced basaltic lava flows, ashfall and pyroclastic density currents.
