This paper presents the results of the tectonic survey of Povoação-Nordeste region, in eastern S. Miguel Island. Faults with three directions cut the studied area. The most abundant structures trend NW-SE to WNW-ESE, while the other directions are NNW-SSE and NE-SW. Kinematic data show the presence of two sets of conjugated faults: one composed of WNW-ESE normal dextral faults conjugated with NNW-SSE normal left structures, and another with WNW-ESE to NW-SE normal left lateral faults conjugated with NE-SW normal dextral structures. Both sets are composed of two pairs of faults presenting oblique slip, which is characteristic of three-dimensional strain. The two conjugated sets of faults indicate the occurrence of two stress fields, separated in time or in space.​
